Senior romance is a topic many of us probably don’t think about but, US stats show that we currently have more single women over 60 years of age than ever before in history. A survey in 2021 by the US census estimated there were 55,892,014 people aged 65 and over in the US, 16.8% of the entire population. While there are several challenges to seniors maintaining a healthy and active sex life many do not let it slow them down when it comes to romance.
Many singles over 50 are turning to online dating to find a mate. According to a study by Pew Research 48% have gone to online dating sites to find a serious relationship, 26% looking for friendship, and 14% looking for casual dating or hook ups. The most popular sites for people over 50 are Match.com, Silver Singles, eharmony and Our Time. Online dating can be more complicated for older adults too because they are more likely to be involved in a scam or fake profile. Seniors may not have the same sense of safety awareness as the younger population putting themselves at risk.
Sexuality is a way we experience and express ourselves sexually. It can involve actions, desires, feelings, and physical touch. Intimacy is a feeling of closeness and connection in a relationship that may or may not be physical. Aging brings opportunities for older adults to redefine what these terms mean to them. Some strive for a sexual and intimate relationship, and some are content with one or the other. Many older couples have a more satisfying sex life compared to when they were younger. They may have fewer distractions, more free time and privacy and they have no worries about pregnancy. They also may be more comfortable expressing what they need which can create a deeper connection.
Unfortunately, the increase in sexual behavior has also created an increased number of STD’s among the older population. Sadly, this does include HIV and AIDS. Seniors are not as aware of sexual protective devices like condoms or dental dams and are less likely to discuss their sexual behavior with their doctors who many times are completely unaware of their promiscuity. The most recent 2021 CDC data shows that Florida leads the nation in new HIV cases and has the third highest rate of infection.
If you are a senior citizen getting involved in romance be safe, be smart, practice safe sex, never go on a date without telling a friend where you are going and…….. make sure to have fun!
