Travel for Seniors

One of the most common things elderly people give up is traveling. There are many reasons for this; being afraid to travel alone, being dependent on others, or the need for adaptive equipment. If traveling is something you have enjoyed, there are many alternatives to help you continue. Let’s explore some of those options that can get you back out on the road, in the air, or on the water. Planning is the key to reducing a senior’s anxiety level while traveling away from home.

There is a non-profit locally called Helping Seniors of Brevard that has started a Senior Travel Club (321-978-5211 or Info@Helpingseniorstravelclub.com) which can be instrumental in assisting an elderly person with traveling. This club is like a one stop shop for all senior travel needs. They have had several successful cruises since starting and only one of the perks is getting the best group pricing. There is no membership fee, and you don’t need to enroll or join until you are ready to travel. All accommodations can be arranged whether you want to travel with a group or go off exploring on your own and if you choose to travel with a family member, they will receive the same perks as the senior! The experts working for the club will make any need for adaptive equipment seamless and can obtain all equipment necessary to make your trip a lifetime memory.

If you are interested but would maybe like to start slower with day trips, check in with your local AARP chapter. They frequently schedule day trips to different places and can obtain group rates to keep costs low. This option is only for people who want to travel with a group. It can be a safe, fun way to sightsee or experience things while making friends. This is a wonderful option for people who no longer drive or just aren’t comfortable driving distances.

Some people simply aren’t comfortable traveling with others but feel they have no other option. Not true! No matter where you want to go some home care agencies can arrange to have an employee accompany you or even drive you to your destination. We have staff who have accompanied clients on cruises, day trips, and one even flew in a client’s private plane for a day trip! If the clients want to go somewhere we will make efforts to get them there. Equipment including portable oxygen concentrators can be rented for trips at places like Brevard Medical Equipment in Merritt Island. If you use oxygen at home reach out to your supplier. Many times, they have portable equipment available for their clients to use on a temporary basis.

The love for travel and exploration doesn’t always fade as we age. With assistance and planning seniors do not have to give it up. You may need some extra help or equipment to go but everything can be arranged to give you a stress free, enjoyable experience. So, if you have a craving to wander, look into one of these options to see if they have a trip planned that interests you, then be adventurous and go for it!
